According to an article in the most recent issue of the Florida Bar News, income from interest on lawyer trust accounts in Florida has dropped 80% since 2008. This loss of income resulted in a 71% cut in the Florida Bar Foundation’s funding of legal aid.
I am very dismayed to see this continuing loss of revenue. Legal Aid is a crucial safety net to ensure justice for low income people in Florida. As legal aid funding continues to decline low income families in Florida become more and more vulnerable to having our civil justice system become less of a place of justice and more of a source of oppression used against them.
