I was in Leon County Court this morning on a landlord tenant case where my client was being sued for eviction by the landlord. What was unusual about this case is that the tenant, my client, had paid the rent by putting money orders in a drop box that was provided by the landlord. The landlord claims to never have received payment, although my client has written evidence that the money orders were cashed.
In recent months I have spoken with several people who have encountered the same problem. In each case they put money orders in a landlord’s drop box, only to find that the landlord never received the money orders and that money orders were cashed. Tenants who submit rent payments via drop boxes should be very careful. It does seem that something is going on where somebody is unlawfully taking these payments here in Tallahassee
