According to an article in today’s ABA Newsletter, a lawsuit alleging violations of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) has been filed against a debt collector for what I consider to be extreme and highly offensive abuse of a disabled military veteran. The article quotes that a paralegal debt collector told the disabled veteran:
“F— you! Pay us your money! You can’t afford an attorney. You owe us. I hope your wife divorces your a–. If you would have served our country better you would not be a disabled veteran living off Social Security while the rest of us honest Americans work our a– off. Too bad; you should have died.”
That anyone feels that an unpaid debt entitles them to speak to another human being in this manner simply appalls me. Sadly, I know from my clients’ experiences that this type of abuse happens every single day and it occurs here in Tallahassee to our vets, our elderly, our disabled, and our unemployed. It’s wrong morally, and it violates the law.
